During their travels they kept extensive records and were later, after retirement, able to write about all their experiences. Volume XV covers their return to Brazil in 1955. There is also an introduction and table of contents written by their son, John R. Crandall, in 1992. There are copies of numerous maps and photographs.

John Casper Branner (1850-1922) was a geologist was born on July 4, 1850, in New Market, Tennessee. He enrolled at Maryville College, but after two years he transferred to Cornell. He developed an interest in Brazil and he accompanied his professor, Charles F. Hartt, there in 1874, staying until 1883. He studied the country's geology, and also searched for vegetable fibers that could be used to make incandescent light. American geologist. Received MS in Geology from Stanford in 1907, then went to Brazil as geological assistant to J.C. Branner. His wife (also a graduate of Stanford) joined him in August, 1908. They spent several years in Brazil and then traveled to the Russian island of Sakhalin, then England and Moscow in search of oil.
